Laser Engine Block Inspection System

In-Process Defect Detection

When Nemak wanted to improve OEE and first-pass yield in their engine block manufacturing line, they partnered with Acieta on this multi-station defect detection cell.

Using certified laser stations and AI-driven real-time analysis, the system provides in-process inspection, identifying issues early and reducing downstream rework.

Benefits

Higher First-Pass Yield

Real-time defect detection helps identify issues earlier, improving yield and reducing downstream scrap and rework costs.

Full Traceability

2D barcode tracking provides quality control records from casting through final inspection without manual documentation.

Improved Safety

Certified laser-based inspection systems remove operators from hazardous detection tasks.

System Components

  • The multi-robot cell includes a FANUC R-2000iC FoundryPRO robot—built for harsh casting environments—that transfers engine block components through each inspection station with precise, repeatable positioning across laser, vision, and eddy current operations.

  • Safety-certified laser inspection stations are integrated directly into the production cell, performing non-contact dimensional and surface measurement at production speed without interrupting material flow.

  • Machine learning-based vision systems analyze inspection data in real time, identifying surface defects and quality deviations with greater consistency and sensitivity than rule-based inspection methods.

  • Non-contact eddy current probes scan cast and machined components for subsurface cracks, voids, and material inconsistencies that visual and laser inspection cannot detect.
